#Khankendi city means “village of the Khan” since it was founded by Ibrahim Khalil Khan.
#Khankendi was renamed by Soviet government.
After regaining independence #Azerbaijan🇦🇿 returned the real name to its historical land.

Although there were no Armenians or Russians in Khankendi in 1813, in 1847 there was a house and an Armenian church inhabited by 80 Armenian and 52 Russian families. Nevertheless, in 1847 the settlement was officially named Khankendi on the maps of Russia #KhanendiNotStepanakert Image

Some “responses” by #Armenia to #Azerbaijan’s goodwill gestures since Nov. 10, 2020:

✅ Deploying saboteurs to #Karabakh, who killed & wounded Azerbaijani civilians & soldiers

✅Secretly sending Armenian servicemen to Karabakh via “#Lachin Corridor” disguised as civilians... 1/
✅Refusal to share maps of 100s of thousands of #landmines planted in #Azerbaijan during nearly 30 years of occupation

✅Continuation of belligerent, revanchist rhetoric and introduction of anti-Azerbaijani resolutions in Western parliaments via Armenian lobby... 2/
✅Looting and burning #Azerbaijani villages & towns before the scheduled withdrawal

✅Stealing artifacts from churches, museums, etc., including, among others, the #Khudavang Monastery and #Shusha Carpet Museum... 3/

My article published by @Tabletmag. I talk about how #Jews and #Muslims in #Azerbaijan have always stood together, through thick and thin, including during the #MarchGenocide of 1918 and two #Karabakh wars tabletmag.com/sections/news/…
On Nov. 10, the 44-day war between #Azerbaijan and #Armenia came to an end, as Armenia agreed to a ceasefire and to withdraw from occupied territories. For the past 30 years, Armenia had occupied 20% of Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory, forcibly displacing 800,000 #Azerbaijanis.
#Shusha is where one of our most decorated and beloved war heroes, #AlbertAgarunov, fought bravely and lost his life to an #Armenian sniper in 1992. His story is both the story of an #Azerbaijani #Jewish war hero and also the story of #Muslim-#Jewish #coexistence and friendship

I've reached out to all my friends in #Artsakh over the last few hours. They confirm heavy fighting throughout the night in and around #Shushi, as well as on the outskirts of #Stepanakert.
The battle for Shushi either way will be a decisive one...
Journalists and thousands of civilians have been evacuated from #Stepanakert overnight and in the morning. Of my 20+ friends in #Artsakh, only one remains on the ground. #Shusha is almost deserted by now, obviously.
The reason is simple: #Shushi isn't 'just' a historical and cultural centre of large symbolic value. It's also the decisive location for the war. "Whoever controls Shushi controls #Artsakh" is a well-known saying locally.

25/ More old maps from 19th century showing zero trace of #Armenia. Meanwhile, #Karabagh and even #Shusha are clearly indicated. #Azerbaijan #Armenia #StopArmenianLies #StopArmenianOccupation

26/To clarify: Armenien is indicated on some of the maps=name of the area. There is no sign of the "ancient Artsakh". If there was a "country of Armenia" and it was not just an area, there should have been the "ancient Artsakh". But since there is no "ancient Artsakh", Armenia=lie
27/ Additionally, Azerbaijan was the name of the modern republic only after 1918. So, "Azerbaijan name is not on these maps" argument is moronic. Empire names change. The Turks who built the empire are still the Turks. Not Armenians... 😄

THREAD 1/ Read @cavidaga's story here to understand the huge emotions in Azerbaijan riding on the war and the subject of return —and also the impossible conundrum that is the town of #Shusha.
asiatimes.com/2020/10/karaba…
2 Shusha is Karabakh’s city on the hill, a town of great meaning for Azerbaijanis, the birthplace of composers and poets, seat of khans. It was also home to many Armenians (who call it #Shushi) and to Karabakh’s cathedral, shelled by Az. forces in the recent fighting.
3 In the late Soviet era Shusha's population was 85 percent Azerbaijani, 13 percent Armenian. See my 2003 book cover, for view of both mosque and church. images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41-e-…

This is tragic to see a-180-degree change in the Arm-Az negotiations from the January 2019 promise of “preparing populations to peace” to the recent July escalations and today’s onset of what looks like a full-scale war. #KarabakhNow 1/4
Lots of provocations starting from Pashinyan’s Stepanakert speech of August 2019 to the resettlement of Lebanese Armenians to #Karabakh, a provocative idea of moving local parliament to #Shusha and many others ignited the Azerbaijani side for the recent months. 2/4
These steps together with the rising military rhetoric on both sides, lack of communication between societies and little involvement of the international community brought us to what we have today. 3/4

There are many questions on the reasons of the escalation and who started the fire first on the #Armenian-#Azerbaijani border in #Tavush/#Tovuz regions yesterday. What is clear is that: 1/7
Both governments were ready for the escalation as the negotiations reached impasse since the last developments including the statements of Armenian PM in #Stepanakert (August 2019), inauguration of the leader of the self-proclaimed government of NK in #Shusha (May 2020),etc. 2/7
This is why the argument of distracting both societies from the unsuccessful struggle against the pandemic of #coronavirus has little ground: it was expected to start anyway. 3/7
