This is a major win against Republican gerrymandering in Virginia! The GOP won a 51-49 majority in 2017 despite losing the statewide popular vote. A new map would make a Dem majority even likelier in 2019 centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/ar…
Because Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam would almost certainly veto whatever replacement gerrymander the GOP tried to send him, the court itself will likely have to draw its own, fairer Virginia state House districts
The Supreme Court has already told the district court in 2017 to reconsider its prior decision to uphold Virginia's state House map. They now have, & it's a big win against GOP racial gerrymandering that should stand a strong chance of surviving appeal dailykos.com/stories/2017/3…
Here's a link to the ruling
These heavily black districts in yellow are some of just a few that the GOP racially gerrymandered in Virginia to manufacture an unearned majority in 2017 even though Democrats won more votes last year
This is essentially the same thing that happened in Alabama, where 2015 SCOTUS forced a lower court to reconsider their ruling upholding the GOP's gerrymander, & SCOTUS upheld the lower court's second ruling striking down the maps, leading to a 2017 redraw
So many Republican congressional or legislative gerrymanders have been thrown out by courts since 2011 over racial or partisan gerrymandering that I had to make a chart instead of a simple list. Only 2 of 19 (Texas) were largely overturned by SCOTUS, though 3 are still unresolved
This chart shows all the states still facing lawsuits seeking to strike down gerrymanders of congressional/legislative maps over partisanship or race. All but one map helps GOP (AR Dems drew a map that backfired so badly that a black Dem is challenging it)
For more background on each of these redistricting lawsuits, visit the @BrennanCenter's page detailing every case brennancenter.org/blog/state-red…
BTW folks, here's a list of the 11 Virginia state House districts that were just struck down earlier today over Republicans' illegal racial gerrymandering. But many adjacent districts will have to be redrawn, too
