Jeff Flake delivered a lengthy tribute to Canada a Senate speech this morning in favour of Bob Corker's symbolic motion against Trump's tariffs, approvingly quoting Trudeau. (Corker wants to pass an actual bill. Republican leaders won't allow a vote.)
Today's symbolic motion comes after Corker, unable to get McConnell to schedule a freestanding vote, tried to attach his anti-tariffs bill to another matter. He was denied unanimous consent by Democratic senator Sherrod Brown, who supports the tariffs.
Here's the transcript of Republican Sen. Jeff Flake's Senate speech supporting Canada against Trump on the steel and aluminum tariffs.
Where this stands: even Republicans who disagree with Trump on tariffs are unwilling to oppose him in any real way.
To be clear, I don't think Flake's speech is important in any practical way. I'm a Canadian correspondent and note when American politicians say things about Canada.
Corker calls his symbolic motion to give Congress "a role" in national security tariffs "a baby step in a good direction." Sherrod Brown, who thwarted a potential vote on Corker's real bill, says he'll support the symbolic motion, "because of course Congress should have a role."
Flake's office contacted me to correct an error he made in his speech about Canada - 40,000 Canadian troops have served in Afghanistan, not 400,000. (The Canadian forces have about 100,000 people including reservists.)
