I'm starting to have daydreams of You Know Who taking advantage of being overseas to just straight-up defect to Russia.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be hugely terrible in the long run, but the writer in me keeps going "what if, tho." And it's maybe (?) the one thing that would get "he has been colluding and trying to tear this country down from the inside" to sink in with his supporters.
"His tariffs destroyed my job, but I still trust him!" "Why is the left so MEAAAAN, why won't they just let him PRESIDENT??" "Nah, you got me. I'm a Russian asset, fuel up the plane."
And Putin would facilitate the extraction because he would think it was HILARIOUS for a sitting American president to just fucking DEFECT.
Meanwhile back in DC the administration would be running around like "HE FUCKING DID WHAT??? HE DID WHAT??????"
Again, it's a cathartic daydream--as in, "What if he finally just ADMITTED IT and we GOT RID OF HIM?"--but IRL it would be incredibly destabilizing and awful and we would still be stuck with the rest of the administration.
Maybe that itself is a useful cautionary note to gain from a train of thought like this: mentally play it out to its logical conclusion and you see that there's no quick cathartic solution to any of this.
There's a time and place for wild ill-advised daydreams, and there's a time and place for sober realism. You just have to know which is which.
