There’s a mountain of research around the racist stereotype of darker skin and criminality that I’ll share here for local journalists who may be covering this racist attack ad @LenoirForMayor ran on @LeeHarrisfor901.

Come on in the room.
Of course, I was late to the game re the problems with this ad. Local blogger Steve Ross @vibinc called it racist (screenshot) and @ryanpoe linked to Ross’ piece this am.

The 9:01: Lenoir criticized for 'racist' mailer

The “bad is black” effect. scientificamerican.com/article/the-ba…
From that same Scientific American piece: “Articles containing negative content were more likely to appear alongside darker colored photographs.”
Is this just about hurt feelings? No. Black defendants with darker skin get harsher sentences than lighter-skinned black defendants- if the victims are white. npr.org/templates/stor…
From the NPR story: “convicted murderers who look more stereotypically black - broad noses, thick lips, dark skin, kinky hair - are more than twice as likely to get the death sentence than are fairer skinned black men.”

These racist stereotypes have real-world effects.
All of these studies I’d read about well before @LenoirForMayor decided he was running for mayor.

I’m a journalist so I think a lot about how POC are portrayed and how stereotypes are perpetuated. @DrIbram @DrPhilGoff @SandyDarity may know of other studies.
I had no involvement in any of this research, which is inconvenient for @LenoirForMayor, because it makes it impossible to blame me.

He doesn’t want to take responsibility or simply apologize.

But he does want to lead a majority black county.
@memphisnews @memphisdaily @tdnpols - is Bill Dries not on Twitter? I don’t expect everyone (anyone?) to be the nerd I am, but this research is real.
