Let's define comedy:
Setup and punchline. The punchline is funny because it breaks the social, logical, or moral expectation established by the setup. Theoretically, as long as it's clever, the harder the divergence from expectation, the funnier the joke.
"James Gunn"
It's precisely why dark comedy regularly reaches for the top shelf of the worst things to joke about. The fact that those things are understood by all to be the worst things on earth means that they provide easy ways to wildly diverge from a innocent setup.
"James Gunn"
That's kind of why I don't enjoy Louis CK's comedy as much anymore... because a dark joke is an agreement between the teller and the audience that all parties know the joke's substance is wrong. Whereas the recent Louis CK revelations show that's not the case... (#MeToo)
Some people have the stomach for wild moral divergences in their punchlines (myself included). Many don't.
My personal view: 95% of the tweets James Gunn told were comedic failures, because those divergences just weren't clever. Shock for shock's sake.
But we have got to remember there's a difference between, e.g. a racist joke and a racial joke . A racist joke makes a racist statement in a funny way. A racial joke makes a race-related joke.
So the main question is was James Gunn trying to say anything beyond "Hey, I'm edgy!"?
Granted, It's Disney, so I get why James Gunn was fired, I'm just really not a fan of autopilot outrage. Especially to the point that he would lose his job.
