Sir Ivan Rogers has made another substantial intervention into the #Brexit debate.

And he makes a very clever argument as to why EU should compromise over Ireland border/Future Relationship. Though frets that it this is not the likely course. 1/Thread

He starts be warning we are at risk "sleepwalking" to disaster as both sides talk past each other. /2
Then he says EU can continue on its Canada or Norway binary course and screw the Brits as a warning to others. /3
But here comes the clever part. Sir Ivan doesn't just make an appeal to the EU's better nature, or to geostrategic stability going forward.

He follows the logic of "Canada+?+" and argues it does not ultimately defend EU interests as is being suggested. /4
He concludes (after noting the FCA unicorn is dead and May cannot sign up to a Customs union:
