Breaking your expensive electronics to own the kids?
bbc.com/news/entertain…
This is what @CaseyExplosion usefully calls "privilege flexing"--doing something destructive and foolish because you can, and because you want to *show* that you can. But this is also a form of parental abuse, quite frankly.
This is why I say casual parental Luddism and anti-video game attitudes are not consequence-free. It leads to this Lord of the Flies bullshit.
How many of us had parents that threatened to break game cartridges, game CDs, or music CDs? I know a few people whose parents are now ashamed of having done that (mine included). Their shame speaks volumes about what they know they did; what they looked like.
Just as when an abusive partner punches a wall near where their spouse is standing, so too does breaking their property send a chilling signal, even if they're never hurt directly. Child abuse works the same way.
I've known people whose parents have: destroyed violins, burned or otherwise destroyed books, broken games/consoles/PCs, ripped up artwork, destroyed clothing. This is abuse, plain and simple. It doesn't matter if the parents bought it or not.
But because our media permits this neo-Luddist nonsense, this BBC presenter can be hailed as a "hero." Spare me. She should be ashamed.
Every parent of young children that I know enforces "screen time" with their children. None would ever smash their tech; because they're not abusive, privilege-flexing wankers.
Also worth noting this is another consequence of the asinine moral panic about Fortnite that's been sweeping the media. Mostly in the UK and Australia. *sighs* Am I going to have to write something?
