A major reason behind this is that the Arab region has the worst free press index in the world. Arabs such as myself prefer to write and publish in English because if we write in Arabic we're (a) trolled by thousands of pro-government accounts; (b) can't really make a living.
In 2011 and 2012 I used to write in Arabic regularly. I switched to English around 2013 as a form of self censorship. Many others have privately told me the same.
