1/ ICE has been getting information from scared immigrant kids *in detention* - and using it to find and deport their relatives.

*This* is the disastrous and entirely foreseeable result

nytimes.com/2018/09/12/us/…
2/ When a child is detained, they're asked:

"Do you have any other close family members who live in the U.S.?"

...and then:

"Immigration status?"

Kids are smart. They *know* that if they give up that information, they put their family in danger.

From @ValeriaLuiselli (2014):
3/ Officials promised that if families came forward to take in those kids, they wouldn't be targeted.

Then, last summer, advocates realized the kids were right. ICE *was* using that data to find and deport their families.

4/ "Oscar" was 7 when his dad was murdered and his mother left him.

He came to this country. His uncle took him in.

ICE came for his uncle.
5/ "Leon" and "Jorge's" mom lived in the U.S. A gang broke into their house and assaulted them.

They came here to be with their mom.

ICE then deported her.
6/ This was happening under the radar.

Then, in May, Trump DHS took off the mask and openly declared that it *would* use information obtained from kids *in detention* - who give that information to try to be with their family again - to find and deport that family.
7/ It gets worse. Not only is ICE reserving the right to deport sponsors who step forward to take care of kids...

...it's also saying that, *before* that child is released, *every adult in the sponsor's house needs to be fingerprinted*
8/ In July, @LegalAidJustice sued to stop this. This policy was scaring sponsors away -- and keeping kids in detention for longer. justice4all.org/wp-content/upl…

The policy hasn't changed.
9/ The next time you hear abstractions on "privacy" and "use restrictions," think about the terrified 7 year old who in government detention and just wants to be with his uncle - and the choice he has to make.

Yes, this has happened before. slate.com/articles/techn…
