Robert Redford is a legendary movie star, a cultural and political icon, and a man who has done wonders for independent film. But is he actually a good actor?
Just so everyone understands, I’ve been wrestling with this question recently, having just rewatched Sneakers for the second time in a month.
I think he’s definitely a solid performer, but I can’t shake the feeling that he’s more of an okay actor who always gets notched up to B+/A- territory by virtue of being one of the most beautiful men who ever lived.
(The male Julia Roberts, if you will)
I am crowdsourcing this question because I feel like, as a gay film nerd who saw Three Days Of The Condor at a VERY formative moment, I can’t really trust my own point of view.
I am basing my ambivalent position on semi-recent viewings of Sneakers, All The President’s Men, Out Of Africa, and TDotC.

Feel free to @ me with other RR performances you think I should check out or revisit. (I hear that he’s terrific in All Is Lost, for example)
