1) "Influence of Political Dynamics on Southern Lynch Mob Formation & Lethality" Ryan Hagen, Kinga Makovi & Peter Bearman, Columbia University (2013)

"We found that low Republican vote share is associated with a higher lethality rate for mobs."
2) "The Democratic Party largely regained control of the state apparatus in the South by the 1880s, and once in power set out to permanently neutralize its opponents through enactment of stringent voting restrictions constructed as a defense against the 'threat of Negro Rule.'
3) As the Democratic Party consolidated its hold on the machinery of the state down to the county level, riding a wave of racial animus to which it had contributed, ... how did it respond to the threat of lynching?
4) "the larger the counterforce against the Democratic Party, the more likely lynching events will be averted—and consequently, the less likely that mobs will be able to murder their intended targets.
5) "While high Republican vote share decreased the likelihood of lynch mob formation, low Republican share decreased the chance of averted lynching by 28.1 percent. When Republican share was low, mob action that ended w/law enforcement intervention became increasingly unlikely.
6) "Variability in frequency and success of (lynch mob) interventions in this period, in the three states under study, was significantly influenced by the political climate, (as measured) through county-level share of votes for Republican candidates in presidential elections.
7) " ... lynching was more frequent precisely in times and places where political competition was curtailed by the establishment of the one-party South. White-on-black violence was openly political in the Reconstruction era ...
8) " ... in localities where Democratic electoral hegemony was most complete during
the establishment of the southern racial caste system, law enforcement officials were less likely to make even a modest gesture toward the citizenship rights of African Americans.
9) "In counties where sheriffs operated in a climate of Democratic hegemony, the option of stepping into halt a lynching—even if only for a brief moment until it could be “legally arranged”—was of little significance."
10) My comment: The Democratic Party invariably has resorted to mob violence to intimidate political opponents and keep marginalized populations, especially African Americans, in line. For them, violence always has been a tactic of FIRST RESORT.
