People are feeling disappointed that the GOP is still in control of the Senate, that the Blue Wave supposedly didn't happen. But we had a party in power that's utterly uninterested in allowing democracy to happen. And even with dramatic voter suppression efforts:
We ended GOP control of the House.

We elected over 100 women tonight.

Adam Schiff is the chair of the House intelligence committee, and has expressed keen interest in stepping up the Russia probe.

We elected a bunch of young, FIERCE candidates.
It's not just the national races, either.

We elected a bunch of attorneys general with fight in them.

Women and men of color. LGBTQ people. Muslims. Native Americans. Jews.

We put power in the hands of exactly the people the GOP wants to keep out of power.
We didn't get every seat we wanted, but that was not going to happen. This isn't a movie.

They did whatever they thought they could get away with to stop people from voting. They failed. People showed up, they persevered, they voted.
It's been a brutal 2 years. People are exhausted. They're still grieving recent tragedies, and those that still feel recent. They're scared. They're fighting despair.

And they showed up, nonetheless. They waited in line. They demanded their ballots.
I know we all wanted to win the big, flashy races: Beto, Stacey Abrams. The ones getting all the media attention. But those were against the odds. We won A LOT.
This election was about harm reduction. It was about stopping the slide. And by that measure, we more than won. We made it harder for Trump and his cronies to advance their agendas. We're going to keep making it harder.
This is what the cavalry showing up usually looks like in real life: not shining soldiers appearing and effortlessly overwhelming the bad guys, but tired, vulnerable people standing their ground. Kids casting their first vote. The refusal to despair.
You are the cavalry, and your work isn't anywhere near done. But you're not alone. You didn't fail. There are people pushing forward ahead of you. There are millions of people beside you. And there's a fierce, brilliant, *good* generation coming in behind you. Hang in there.
And while you're at it, look at the joy on the faces of these trailblazers. Do you see it? Not just relief, but excitement. theguardian.com/us-news/2018/n…
