PM says some said this deal was impossible... has been achieved & wants to address British people

- ends Freedom of Movement for good
- end to vast annual payments to EU - £394m a week investment in NHS
- control of laws - ending ECJ jurisdiction in UK
- out of CAP
- free of CFP
-Deal keeps supply chains intact, out of Single Market and Customs Union but closest relationship of any country to EU
“This is a deal that works for the whole UK including the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies”
“For future partnership UK will be negotiatingvfor Gibraltar - constitutional status will not change”...
In any negotiation you do not get everything you want - it is a good deal for our country...
PM: before Christmas MPs will vote on this deal... (potential for it to be put back a bit then to last December)
PM tells me: “this is the only possible deal” echoing what Juncker/Barnier and others have said

EU sources say there will be “no summit” and there are “no actual talks”, some discussions on reassurances. Another diplomatic source tells me even those will not come before the vote next week. /1
Still not entirely sure whether the Meaningful Vote debate that resumes tomorrow will be the continuation of the one curtailed last month or a new one. Former more likely. Would have to make special provision for previous speakers to speak again /2
Tory MPs who attended the Downing St drinks were expecting a bit of a rousing unity speech from PM - surprised there wasn’t one at all even “none of you will be back here” type cajoling. On the way out none I spoke to had changed mind.

Here is Operation Fennel - storing 10,000 cross channel lorries - the 5000 headed for Dover Port at Manston and 2000 For Eurotunnel on the M20 with a further 2000 on the M26 and then potentially stage 5 is for storage outside of Kent, if all that gets full...

Unlike the US, the head of govt can be selected by the legislature at any time, and does not necessarily trigger an election.

A lot has been said on May's queue jumper comments and her non-apology, but one thing has not been looked at in detail, to my knowledge, namely how the UK government's stubborn refusal to understand or correctly represent freedom of movement infantilizes British citizens 1/
Freedom of movement is a reciprocal right that British citizens also enjoy, and that many have used to work, study, retire in the EU. It is not a special privilege EU citizens enjoy to jump any sort of queue (a queue I might add that May and her ilk have installed & tightened) 2/
For example, I have a very clever student, a British citizen without additional citizenship, who wants to do a master's, eventually a PhD and he's looking into programmes in the EU (e.g., Paris) for this. But I had to tell him, I have no idea how it will be with Brexit 3/
