Will the Brexit Deal bring us together?
▪️2yrs of transition but still negotiating the deal we're transitioning into🤜🏼🤛🏼
▪️2yrs where the only real difference is a LOSS of control and it's v likely the final deal will be similar🤜🏼🤛🏼
▪️A backstop which LITERALLY splits the UK 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Don't believe me? Conservative MP @CSkidmoreUK, who supports the Brexit deal, has confirmed that the only difference people will see in the first two years is that we will no longer be represented in Brussels. We will ACTUALLY be dictated to.
And then @VictoriaLIVE forces him to admit that we don't have a trade deal with the EU yet. We'll be negotiating it for at least two years, during which, we be fighting about that too...
And as I mentioned before... We end up in a the backstop where the EU sets our trade policy WITHOUT US, unless we can solve the unsolvable Northern Irish border conundrum, and we can't get out of the backstop unless the EU agrees to let us out. Again... Loss of control!

I don't have a party to run / election to win, so maybe it's rich of me to stand on principle; maybe I'm naive, but...
I'm not willing to pretend that a good Brexit deal is possible just because I'm scared people (who I should have won over on Brexit) might think I'm ruining it.
I get why some might choose that due to their own strategic priorities. But if we go down the path of "keep trying Brexit until every last person is convinced it can't work":
a) We risk crashing out.
b) People would blame the EU not Brexit #HowWeGotInThisMess
c) It's dishonest
🔻The Tories want to endanger the Belfast Agreement which the EU won't allow. And even this Brexit will be rejected.
🔻Labour's Brexit must meet the 6 tests. That means Single Market & Customs Union. Parliament would never approve that for the same reasons we're stuck now.

Barry Gardiner says a Labour Brexit would mean the UK would have a veto over the EU's trade deals, despite not being an EU member. More false promises about Brexit. This country deserves better.
He just proved that a general election now would be POINTLESS!

In fairness, Gardiner then goes on to say they'd put that deal to the people, but that deal will never exist.
That would put us in the exact same position we're in now, (no viable deal), but we'd have simply wasted several months.

"We would have a customs union" = Same trade deals. No customs checks as the same tariffs apply either side.
"Not a rule taker" i.e. we're not in any deals we don't like.
If we can say no for ourselves, then we can say no for the EU ➡️VETO

1. #Brexit was never an economic proposition but that doesn't mean we can simply disregard the economic concerns. They are both real and urgent. Our future trade and geostrategic position matters - and for Brexit to be workable long term we need to be mindful of that.
2. On that score we need to start from a position of relative strength - which we won't if we leave without a deal. We'll be taking a hit of anywhere up to 200bn a year in trade by way of losing critical single market participation. That's a substantially weaker starting position
3. Much of our trade is interwoven. It's not a matter of shipping a tin of beans from point A to point B. Complex products are only worth selling if you can sell the service contracts that go with them - and that means being able to dispatch engineers.

Before this week's #Brexit shenanigans, I said this:

"With May as Prime Minister there can be no Brexit deal"

I stand by that statement

I see no way that the #EUCO - ongoing as I write this thread - can give May anything that'll appease the Brexit hard liners in her party

🇪🇺 is not going to make the backstop time limited or allow 🇬🇧 to unilaterally withdraw it. So the deal on the table is essentially unchanged
The Tories reaching across the political divide to Labour still looks like a ridiculously long shot as well:

1. Nobody ought to be surprised by the ineptitude unfolding in British politics in respect of #Brexit. Brexit really just brings it centre stage - but it has been there all along for those who care to look...
2. Take the Iraq invasion. Our generals assured us that it was just a matter of keeping the peace and ti was our recent experience in Northern Ireland than made us the operational experts. That assessment proved to be... less than accurate. Some might say breathtakingly arrogant
3. We assumed that we could keep the peace by running a hearts and minds operation going out in soft skinned landrovers. It didn't take long for that idea to disintegrate and soon we were taking avoidable casualties and losing control of the situation.
