I love writing, I love journalism. But I have to be honest, a lot of the American media establishment is clueless.
There are people I respect who are excellent journalists but the industry that calls itself journalism in America is more PR than press. And far too many people in it are clueless and careerist to the point where they serve nothing beyond their egos.
Between management chasing ratings revenue like a junkie, and editors giving their mediocre bros chance after chance to publish uninformed hot takes while Black and WOC journalists are marginalized, a weak public discourse is what you get.
Some examples: Last week the editor of Vox tweeted this. Why are you giving ANY politician the benefit of the doubt in the first place?

Yeah, I noticed something:
A branch of the NCGOP was firebombed in 2016. Some New York editors set up a gofundme to repair it. People told them they were engaged in active voter suppression but they weren't gonna let that get in the way of a chance to be smug and self-righteous.
These examples here are well connected people who shape public opinion for millions of citizens. If they move like this, what hope does the public have of being well informed?
@ReignOfApril said something I never forgot: "It's better to follow individual journalists than any news org." That's excellent advice, because American news has become negligent. A lot of what's going on politically is because of that.
Seek out trustworthy journalists. They're out here.
