Media & storytelling has always been my “religion”. I’d argue that it’s always been everyone’s. People carve up the territory in their minds via maps that I reject. Bollywood, WWE, the World Cup, the Kardashians, Twitter, The Illiad, Shakespeare, all part of the same whole
People who are severely invested in their specific cults, sects, denominations and so on sometimes get offended when you point this out. All fandoms are fandoms, whether it’s Jesus or Logan Paul or BTS or Elon Musk or Taleb or Rajinikath or the Unabomber or AOC or LKY or Trump
I’ve always been fascinated by the phrase “god-fearing”. I do not fear god, I fear the *mechanisms* by which the image of god is sustained. I fear being murdered if and when an innocent question gets interpreted as blasphemy. Really, I am “man-fearing”. Hell hath no fury...
How do you optimise for learning and interestingness without being stuck in a sanitized kiddie playgroup, or rubbing against murderous elements? IMO you have to understand the mind of the fanatic, which sometimes involves clothing yourself in their robes. Tricky business
If you want to appreciate this better I recommend watching one of the greatest movies ever made about social strategy and group dynamics: Mean Girls [2004]
