For far too long, our terrible laws and bad judicial rulings have forced the United States to allow illegal aliens to live and work in our country while years-long immigration proceedings roll on. That ends today. #MPP
Starting now, @DHSgov is implementing Migrant Protection Protocols #MPP which may require aliens who enter from MX & claim asylum to remain in MX throughout immigration proceedings. 90% of asylum claims are NOT granted by a judge. We want to help those who truly need it.
Over the last 5 years, @DHSgov has seen a 2000% increase in aliens claiming credible fear who’ve been placed in expedited removal, this new policy will allow those w worthy asylum claims the opportunity for their claims to be heard quicker & weed out frivolous/fraudulent claims
The United States of America is committed to affording aliens rights under the law, including access to counsel, but we will no longer allow a free pass into the United States.

The threat is real. The number of terror-watchlisted encountered at our Southern Border has increased over the last two years. The exact number is sensitive and details about these cases are extremely sensitive.
I am sure all Americans would agree that one terrorist reaching our borders is one too many. These are just the terror suspects we know about who reach our border.
Thousands of terror-watchlisted individuals transit our hemisphere each year, and we work with law enforcement, the intel community, and allies to keep them from using illicit pathways to reach the U.S.

This AM, all of #SanYsidro Port of Entry's northbound lanes were temporarily closed to initiate additional port hardening efforts after @CBP officials were notified that a large # of caravan migrants were planning to rush the border in an attempt to gain illegal access to the US.
.@CBP and @DeptofDefense appropriately responded by blocking the lanes, deploying additional personnel and seeking assistance from other law enforcement and federal assets. #CBP has reopened lanes for legitimate trade and travel. I want to thank them for their swift actions.
Unfortunately, some members of the caravan are purposely causing disruptions at our border ports of entry. There is a legal and illegal way to enter the US. We have deployed additional forces to protect our border. We will enforce all our laws.

I will not stand by while our immigration system continues to deteriorate. We need real solutions which can only be accomplished through changing the law. I urge Congress to act.
Surely it is the beginning of the unraveling of democracy when the body that makes the laws - rather than change them- asks the body charged with law enforcement to not enforce the law. That simply cannot be the answer. Congress must act.

A few other thoughts on the EO Trump just signed:

- Trump is doubling down on the zero tolerance policy of prosecuting asylum seekers.
- Rather than end separation, the EO will mean kids as young as infants are incarcerated, in jail-like facilities.

- Incarcerating children is inhumane. The @AmerAcadPeds says that DHS "facilities do not meet the basic standards for the care of children in residential settings."

- Aside from being inhumane, family incarceration is insanely costly. ~$320 per person, per day. Alternatives to detention cost a fraction of that.

The Family Case Management Program cost only $36 p/d, per family.
