When politicians say “we will take control of borders” they mean “we will *always* be telling you we need more powers & money to take control of borders”

Trump, Salvini, Javid... All the same. All promising what can’t be delivered in an open democracy.
If “control” just means “checks which minimise rule-breaking, then <100 people in a few days isn’t news.

So by choosing to draw attention, Javid is promising what he can’t deliver - no rule-breaking.

“Prevention” is what led to this (small number of) people risking their lives. But sure, let’s spend more money on that.
“Prevention” smashed up the Calais migrant town, where migrants had better chance of informed choices - where they could share info & be helped by informed NGOs.

Because immigration enforcers see info sharing as a threat, not a protection.
“Prevention” requires UK visas from people from countries where persecution is rife. So they can’t use regular planes, trains, boats or busses.

a) attack - eviscerate Chequers for cherry picking

b) parry - play for time, probe UK real red lines

c) focus on what is deliverable to conclude Withdrawal Agreement in Autumn /2

It is the last of these where smart money lies. Chequers is dying anyway and is a 'future relationship issue'.

The focus is delivering a divorce treaty by 29.03.19 and for this most of work is done.
