California Sen. Kamala Harris went to high school in Montreal. Her Westmount classmates tell me they're excited about her potential run for president, and not surprised: thestar.com/news/world/201…
I called up Hugh Kwok, the Montreal car businessman whose shoulder Harris had her arm on in the Class of '81 photo. He had no idea she was in politics. When I asked him what he thought of her running for president, he asked, very casually, "President of what?"
Harris's cautious response when I asked about how she was impacted by her years in Montreal/Quebec/Canada, or memories of Canada, or her connection to Canada: “While my sister Maya and I made great friends and even learned some French, we were happy to return home to California."
In conclusion: Most of Harris's Canadian classmates remember her as an outgoing achiever who danced well, dressed well and made friends across racial and economic lines. One, however, is still upset that Harris ditched her in Grade 11, and now calls Harris "pretend sweet." #drama
Before Kamala Harris, the most successful politician from Quebec’s Westmount High was former Canadian Conservative public safety minister and Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day, class of 1967...who was, to my surprise, pretty positive about Harris.
