1/ There are many cases against there being a ‘God’ in the form most religious people believe today. Most of my arguments are based in logic, but I want to show the scientific grounding behind there not needing to be (or impossibility of there being) a creator. (A common belief).
2/ The below is mostly paraphrased from Stephen Hawkings’ ‘Brief Answers To The Big Questions.’ Fundamentally, there are laws of nature that govern everything. We are unable to change or break them. But by understanding them we can then understand our own origin and existence.
3/ Only 3 ingredients are needed to make a universe. Matter, energy and space. Einstein showed mass and energy are essentially the same (E=mc^2). This cuts the ingredients needed to two. Space and energy were both created in the big bang.
4/ In the big bang, as the universe expands, empty space is created that acts as a store of the negative energy required to counterbalance the positive (including physical mass). These are zero-sum. “If the universe adds up to nothing then you don’t need a God to create it” - SH.
5/ The trigger for the start lies in quantum mechanics. At the sub-atomic level, we know that particles can appear at random, stick around for a while, and then vanish again, to reappear somewhere else. The universe itself was this small before expanding to its current state.
6/ There was no cause of the big bang, as we know space and time are fundamentally intertwined (Einstein). Our universe started as an infinitesimally small, infinitesimally dense, black hole. It was not until the big bang that time itself began.
7/ To further explain, consider a ‘normal’ black hole. This is a star so massive that it has collapsed in on itself. Its gravitational pull is so strong that not even light can escape it (hence the black). It’s already so powerful that it both warps and distorts time.
8/ If a clock were thrown in to one, the hands would turn slower and slower until they stopped completely. The clock isn’t broken, it’s just that time itself does not exist here. With no time before the big bang, it’s clear there is no time for a creator to make the universe in.
