Johnson’s friendship with Steve Bannon is leading him into Breitbart territory. This is very dangerous for him, and Britain. Nobody should forget Bannon helped found the now defunct and self-confessedly criminal Cambridge Analytica. He is also a key subject of the Mueller probe
I’m going to write this up for the @BylineTimes but the origin of the Deep State conspiracy is pure Infowars and Breitbart. It’s also the key defence of Trump supporters against the multiple indictments of Mueller’s probe into Russian interference.
James Delingpole turned the US conspiracy into a Brexit one a few days ago on Breitbart by coining the ‘Remainer Deep State’ and it seems Boris has been paying attention.
The depth of Johnson’s friendship with Bannon has been underestimated. They first met when Bannon was in the White House in early 2017 and have been in contact ever since. Bannon said this summer that Boris should be PM
Just so you know where Bannon is coming from: in the same interview Bannon praised Yaxley Lennon (T Robinson) as a ‘force of nature’ and akin to Kanye West. Previously Bannon had called him the ‘Backbone of Britain, despite his various criminal convictions. Flattering, eh?
The support for Yaxley Lennon fits in with Bannon’s far right ‘Movement’ which encompasses most the neo-fascist alt Reich parties in Western Europe. But the proximity to Boris Johnson is key. He is not a fringe figure.
As former Foreign Secretary, Johnson would have been briefed by MI6 and GCHQ who are widely reported to have provided intel during Trump’s election campaign on contacts with Russia.
Boris has his own ‘Russian’ embarrassment. The FBI probe began when Trump’s campaign manager George Papadopolous started boasting about his Russian contacts in a London bar in 2016. His Russian intermediary was Joseph Mifsud.
As @Byline_Media reported, Mifsud was boasting as late as October 2017 that he was meeting Johnson to talk about Brexit. At first the FCO had no record of this, then photos of the two together were found byline.com/column/3/artic…
This meeting with Mifsud may be innocuous. But when it comes to Bannon and Trump’s alleged Russian connections, Boris Johnson cannot claim innocence as FCO boss. And Bannon is still a target of the Mueller inquiry.
The kindest explanation for taking up Bannon’s Deep State rhetoric is that Johnson is willing to use any populistic tactic to boost his career, even if that means undermining the civil service, law enforcement and intelligence services. Not a great look for a would-be PM
But there is a darker possibility. In the US, the ‘Deep State’ trope has been used to discredit Mueller’s findings even before they are published. Is there a chance Johnson knows what’s coming, and how it implicates figures in the UK, and is getting the defence in advance?
