Good analysis from @qjurecic and @benjaminwittes. My guess is that when historians write this history they will find that the FBI actually resisted investigating the Trump campaign and Trump. Firing Comey was just the straw that broke the camels back. 1/ theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
There was a charade going on before Comey was fired that Trump wasn’t under investigation. That may have been technically true. But his campaign was and what is abundantly clear is that Trump ran the Trump campaign. 2/
The NYT story even notes that Comey and the FBI feared opening an official investigation into Trump because they thought it would leak. So it’s clear they were treading very carefully. 3/
What’s also clear is that what launched the FBI investigation into Trump - Papadopolus talking to the Aussie Amb. - was proceeded by lots of other incriminating info. That too was the straw that broke the camels back. See this thread: 4/
And of course, when given the opportunity to acknowledge the investigation during the campaign, the FBI kept it a secret and misled the NYT. 5/ nytimes.com/2016/11/01/us/…
This matters b/c the Trump-GOP attack on the FBI is that they were out to get Trump. Witch hunt! But the reality is that the FBI may very well have been resistant to investigating him, despite having a mountain of evidence to do so. 6/6
