Choose your own own brexit, any brexit, within reason, Labour MPs could be told
Remember that Lab conf motion: “If we cannot get a general election Lab must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote.”

MP: “I can’t go thru this weekend without a decision”
Lab brexit subcommittee has been meeting in recent days to decide what to.

Spokesman says no decision yet but 2 sources say thinking evolving.

Pressure from 2nd ref Lab MPs growing to endorse People’s Vote
Where will Labour policy go next?

One option gaining favour is let Lab MPs vote for any soft brexit or they want OR a referendum. Competing plans set out in amendments next week

This means for MPs

Norway plus ✔️
People’s Vote ✔️
Regulatory alignment plus customs union ✔️
Why does this matter?

1. If adopted this means Labour is *not* fully behind a second referendum - just an option - which will disappoint some

2. Lots of these plans don’t end Free Movement which was in Labour manifesto

3. It will risk accusations of kicking can down road

BUT
4. Does it make it harder for Labour frontbench to reject a big comprehensive offer from the government in any cross party talks?

A Labour spokesman said no decisions had been made

Whitehall meeting this morning to discuss how cross-party brexit talks might be structured. Possibly led by David Lidington, Julian Smith, Michael Gove & Gavin Barwell

(The cabinet office - home of coalition negotiations - take back control! The ERG won’t like it tho)
I suspect when the ERG criticise, more brexiteers will be added or substituted to this list ... so treat as provisional
The idea is to have David Lidington in the lead. He has been at the forefront of unofficial “reach out” efforts already

12 members of hard brexit ERG send “Dear Colleague” letter

- ERG chair Jacob Rees Mogg is NOT a signatory. He would vote for the deal if backstop is axed but this letter’s objections go well beyond that
A “dear colleague” letter is something MPs said to each other
I don’t know that’s why JRM didn’t sign. But I do know his position - as outlined in meeting with May pre Xmas - isn’t compatible with the letter. So it’s a reasonable starting point for inquiry

...12 ain’t a big show of strength either...

Many Remainers have watched Question Time through their hands or not watched at all as this Leave stronghold reinforced the simple messages of Brexiters

It was very disheartening, but not any more
2) Week after week we had the right wing agitator "columnists" like Oakeshott, HartleyBrewer and others come on & shout betrayal, will of the people, Remoaners whilst the crowd cheered them on

"why can't we just leave?" the audience cried to rapturous applause

Until 6 weeks ago
3) occasionally a brave audience member or panelist would say "hang on, this Brexit thing isn't going that well" before being shouted down.

The tide has now massively shifted. The audiences have pivoted & no one is confidently supporting Brexit

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

To clarify, I am remain, but I feel a 2nd ref is monumentally risky & perhaps dangerous:-

1. Polls haven't changed much, result could easily be the same
2. Another campaign of hate will embolden the far right
3. If remain win. Leavers will demand another vote
4. Chaos & unrest are likely whatever the result, possibly violence too

What happens if it's still 'Leave'? Picture the chaos, square one. You're simply allowing the Tories more time to fail to come up with a solution. Every day that continues people in this country will suffer
What if it's 'Remain'? Leavers will, with some justification, query why this vote is more valid than the first. This has the potential to cause a constitutional crisis.

People can say 'we know the facts now' all they like, that will not placate millions of angry voters.
