You're bored of Brexit, right? Yeah so am I so is everyone. So you won't like this but I have bad news. We will still be talking about Brexit for many more years, maybe a decade - WHATEVER happens. However the events of the next few weeks play out. Think about it (thread): 1/
You think you'll get closure of a sort if TM gets a deal thru Parliament? No. That's JUST THE WITHDRAWAL. Once we're out we need to decide our future relationship. That debate (Norway vs Canada all over again) will take YEARS and may be even more divisive than today's debate 2/
Perhaps u reckon no deal Brexit will be the "cleanest" way out? One quick rip & the plaster's off, right? Wrong. Having left the UK would then spend the following yrs building/rebuilding the institutions, regulations & agreements that allow us to function in the global economy 3/
Would cancelling Brexit put an end to all this? Not likely. Millions will be dismayed, the demands to leave will continue to echo, the fury over an alleged travesty of democracy may never dissipate. Years down the line we will almost certainly still be talking abt Brexit 4/
A 2nd referendum, or extending Article 50, will of course only prolong things. On the one hand you might argue that we will be able to debate the UK's future without the sword of damocles hanging over us. Perhaps it might be more intelligent. It'll still take a LONG time 5/
But. Perhaps it's a good thing we will be talking about Brexit for YEARS. After all what's at stake is UK's place in the world. Its relationship with globalisation. Great travesty of post-1970s politics is we never had a proper debate about these issues. Let's have the debate 6/
Real question: how to debate our future in an intelligent way. That's clearly not what has happened over the past 2yrs. Instead #Brexit debate has been co-opted on either side by remainers and leavers unwilling to compromise. That's no reflection of reality, or the ref result 7/
Best answer is to come to terms with the fact that Brexit won't be "over" any time soon. Sorry. This is a PROCESS not an EVENT. That doesn't suit politicians. Some of you will find it frustrating. But allowing this debate to last ages is the most sane route to a fair outcome 8/8
