What we are witnessing today goes far beyond Republican and Democrat. It is nothing less than a total war between the Christian and liberal understanding of the human person.

You must pick a side.

What does it mean to be human? Are we embedded in community, family, inescapably dependent on others who in turn depend on us? Or are we independent atomized individuals? Does being dependent make us less human?

Are we beings of infinite worth adored by God, inherently deserving of a flourishing life? Or are we interchangeable economic units on a spreadsheet, valuable only insofar as we produce wealth?

Do we belong to a specific place, a home, a city, a country, a gift of God’s creation? Or are we rootless tourists hooked to the cloud, destroying our environment with a gnostic detachment from the material?

Is suffering an inescapable part of our humanity, or are they problems to be eliminated at all costs, including the elimination of those who suffer?

Does freedom consist of submitting to our purpose, of consecrating the human will to the divine? Or does freedom mean unleashing the will as a tool of domination?

Are our bodies good? To be cherished and protected? To give life? Or are we masses of flesh and nerve endings, products to be sold for another’s pleasure on the sexual marketplace?

Do we exist in history, part of a great story that includes our ancestors and descendants, or are we stuck in the eternal present like gods? Why do we care for the elderly? Why do we have children?

Claims of “progress” aside, the liberal understanding of the human person has not changed. As I showed in my college thesis, all that has changed is the material conditions that have allowed more groups to prove they are “human” by producing wealth. drive.google.com/file/d/0B2lQ3V…
