Weekend listening material is @eugenewei on @patrick_oshag podcast. No surprise this was outstanding, Eugene is one of the most interesting people I've come across on Twitter. Hits on travel, cultural capital, signaling, media, social networks, etc... investorfieldguide.com/wei/
Fascinating idea of social networks requiring proof of work (posts) to gain currency (likes, followers), and that as a network ages, attaining currency becomes harder and harder. Also that networks may require a refresh at some point to remain relevant, or they risk stagnating.
Eugene says he sees food as the new status marker, because there's a scarcity aspect to it. From 3 star restaurants to that secret noodle place in a back alley in Tokyo. Which made me think about Andrew's recent multiple posts on kitchenless homes.
Not sure I agree with the idea of kitchenless homes for the broad majority of a country like the US with low density, but to the extent we head that way, in home cooking will become a scarcity item that will take on even more social capital. Odd, but fascinating, to think about.
To some extent you already see that in urban cores, where delivery/eating out is dominant, and space is limited. There's a signalling aspect to having space, time and ability to cook an in home meal. This will sound crazy to people who don't live on top of each other I recognize.
