Impasse Ds and Rs hit last night was over detaining convicted felons.

GOP said in talks Saturday can we at least agree that convicted violent felons shouldn’t count against the cap on the number detained.

Ds didn’t agree, sources told
@elwasson and me.

Dems want to cap the number of detention beds available, in order to force Trump admin to prioritize detaining violent criminals rather than ordinary undocumented immigrants.

GOP says violent criminals in US illegally—convicted murderers, rapists—shouldn’t count toward cap.
Dems are also demanding language in border security deal aimed at blocking Trump from shifting money to build wall, per @elwasson.

This language could possibly stymie Trump from executive actions meant to tap other accounts to pay for wall.

Trump: “They want a new subject!”
Ds and Rs in Congress salvaged a deal on border security that depends on Trump accepting less than the $5.7B he’s been demanding for wall.

—$1.375B for 55 new miles of border fencing.
—Dems dropped cap on number of immigrant detentions.

This deal, which would avert another shutdown, awaits Trump sign off.

He’ll be more fully briefed on details today (via staff and TV).

Mark Meadows: "...kicks the can down the road yet again..." "failing to address..."

Hannity: “...garbage.”

Laura Ingraham: “Pathetic.”
“We don’t know what’s in the document,” Hogan Gidley says, referring to compromise border security deal.

Gidley says he hasn’t talked to Trump yet today after president’s 2:30a arrival back at White House after Texas rally, but Mulvaney told staff: need to hear nuances of deal.
TRUMP: “I can’t say I’m happy” with the border security compromise.

Tells reporters in Cabinet Room he’s not thrilled, and Democrats are being obstructionist. But wall is being built anyway, he says.
“It’s not doing the trick,” Trump says of the compromise deal congressional Ds and Rs have tentatively reached.

Trump says he has to study it.

And can add to it, he says in Cabinet meeting.
TRUMP, discussing border deal meant to avert another closure of the federal govt:

“I don’t think you’re going to see a shutdown.”
