“Deaths of despair” (suicide, alcohol or drugs) are remarkably high among middle-aged, native men in East Germany.

Despite a strong decline, they are still much higher today than in the west and even higher than in the United States (Case-Deaton study).

Germany’s reunification was a massive economic and social shock for citizens in East Germany. Deaths of despair among middle-aged, native men in 1991 was more than twice the level in the US today.
