The real reason why many greens resist technological fixes for climate change (nuclear power, carbon capture, geo-engineering) is that such solutions would obviate the need for a "spiritual awakening" and a radical new way of living. Their biggest fear is that it might WORK.
Moreover, no-one likes to be proven wrong. If you predict the end of the world and nothing happens, then you've embarrassed yourself. Might that be why many green apocaholics freak out and shout "hubris!" whenever some scientist suggests ACTUAL solutions to climate change? /2
Someone like Paul Ehrlich has been predicting catastrophes for decades. Time and again, his prognostications have proven utterly false. But there he is again, in 2018, unrepentant: "Collapse of civilization is a near certainty". It's as if he WANTS this apocalypse to happen. /3
Right-wing apocaholics prophesying "Eurabia" suffer from this condition too: the perverse desire to see one's own dire predictions borne out, and the refusal to look at any evidence that things might not be as dire you suggest. ("Islam CANNOT modernize, you gullible fools"!) /4
Bruno Latour argues that people who consider geo-engineering should be "put into a straitjacket". Philipp Blom's only hope for averting climate apocalypse is a "tooth fairy" who will visit people at night, scaring them into collective awakening (really!).
I love it when people reply as if to demonstrate my point. :) See, Eurabia is "inevitable", just like the collapse of civilization is a "near certainty" for Paul Ehrlich. (Btw, read @aliamjadrizvi's The Atheist Muslim for evidence of islamic enlightenment)
