In his 13-page opinion, Superior Ct Judge G. Bryan Collins, Jr. writes, “an illegally constituted General Assembly does not represent the people of North Carolina and is therefore not empowered to pass legislation that would amend the state’s constitution.” #ncpol #ncga #breaking
The original lawsuit, filed by @Forward_Justice for the @ncnaacp and @cleanairNC in August 2018, asserted that the #ncga was “unconstitutionally constituted” due to gerrymanders and therefore the amendments were “void.” #ncpol bit.ly/2Iu0hL6

I promised to post on the numbers I crunched earlier today along with some general observations about #NC09 in a tweet storm. Starting it now, will stop for dinner for a bit, then come back to it. Since this story has gone national, ppl want to know more so here goes. #ncpol 1/
First - some overall info: 282,717 ppl cast ballots in the #NC09 race between Harris (R) and McCready (D). As it stands now, the numbers are: 139,246 for Harris and 138,341 for McCready (a difference of 905 votes), and 5,130 for the Libertarian candidate Jeff Scott. #ncpol 2/

Awesome news for redistricting reform! The U.S. Supreme Court's decision not to hear the GOP's appeal paves the way for more state supreme courts to use their state constitutional guarantees of the right to vote & "free elections" to ban gerrymandering like PA's Supreme Court did
North Carolina (Antia Earls) & Michigan (Sam Bagenstos & Megan Kavanagh) have key 2018 supreme court races where progressives can gain the power to use their state constitutions to constrain gerrymandering. State supreme courts are the future of anti-gerrymandering litigation

Another 120,000+ votes were cast during the 2nd day of in-person early voting yesterday in NC. Cumulatively, 256,989 ballots have been cast during in-person early voting so far & 275,254 via all methods. This continues very robust turnout. Partisan breakdown attached #NCGA #NCPOL
In 2010 there was a 17 day early voting period, on the 2nd day there were 34,994 votes cast. In 2014 it was a 10 day early voting period, the 2nd day there were 114,201 votes cast. This year is an 18 day early voting period, 2nd day there were 120,817 votes cast. #NCGA #NCPOL
the partisan breakdown of early voters in NC was consistent from Day 1 of unperson early voting & Day 2. Dems lead, which is not unexpected. For context...

2014 Total Early Voting Turnout (all methods):
Dem 47.3%
Rep 32.1%
Una 20.4%

You need a photo ID to fly (Pat McCrory bill signing video when he signed 2013 voter ID bill. NOT TRUE. TSA has lots of workarounds for those without government photo ID, see FOX NEWS story: google.com/amp/www.foxnew… /2 #ncpol
“You have to have by law a photo ID to buy alcohol or cigarettes.” NOT TRUE. If merchant requires a photo ID they have a safe harbor if it’s phony. But no law requiring it /3 .....
