i wanna share a story about my dad (@fayyazhashmi14) and the power of god that i’ll try to do justice, but when i heard it made me certain that there is such a thing as a higher power that created all this for us and listens to us when we’re at our most vulnerable. [a thread]
years ago, my dad, who’s a man of science (a cardiothoracic surgeon), was operating on a very sick patient. they had an aortic dissection, which if you are familiar with, is a tear in the inner layer of the aorta that allows the heart to pump blood to the rest of your body.
aortic dissections are nasty business. it can cause a ballooning of your aorta, possibly causing further tears or even it bursting into your thoracic cavity, depriving the rest of your body from blood and oxygen. if that ever happens, you die within minutes.
back to the operation, my dad was trying to close this tear in this patient’s aorta in the same way you suture up a deep cut on your skin (you use needle and thread aka stitches).
well, because the layer in the aorta he was trying to suture together was saturated with blood, it’s like trying to sow together a soaked paper towel that’s been torn in two and it’s floating on a pool of water. he just could not get the suture and thread to stick.
after what, to him, felt like forever and his patient facing certain death, my dad put his tools down for a moment, bowed his head, said to himself, “please, Allah, help me with this patient.” the very next suture, the thread stuck. he then proceeded to sow up the patient’s tear.
now idk how the patient is today, but the patient survived that operation, and went home several days after their surgery with minimal complications.
i’m hoping my baba can fill in the details, but that’s when i was certain that a god exists and that He doesn’t need any of us, but we need Him. take from this story what you will. you can believe in god or not. the point is stop judging. just be a good person. that’s it.
