Racial animus measures don't well capture those who both acknowledge & like white privilege; they fear threats to it via racial change; white identity predicts views of immigration better than racial resentment, without impacting others (like Aff Action or Tea Party support) 2/n
White identity not only predicts Trump support (without mattering for other Republican primary candidates) & opposition to Obama, but also historically increased support for Wallace, Nixon, & Pat Buchanan; this helps establish the line of political appeals that led to Trump 3/n
Of course, both traditional anti-black attitudes & racial resentment still matter independently in American public opinion & are associated, but I was convinced that neither is a necessary component of white identity (which often acknowledges advantages of whiteness) 4/n
Below is @AshleyJardina preferred white identity measure (though she is forced to use simpler feelings for lots of the book). I hope it is included on many future surveys, as it may only become more important in a diversifying country
