The following exciting-sounding operations are not scary interventions by the state. They are sensible planning by civil servants for a "bumpy ride" (to say the least) if the UK suddenly leaves the EU next Friday night.
The following exciting-sounding operations are not scary interventions by the state. They are sensible planning by civil servants for a "bumpy ride" (to say the least) if the UK suddenly leaves the EU next Friday night.
1) Operation Yellowhammer - the centrally-run operation at the Civil Contingencies Secretariat that will keep across all relevant government departments and try to plug any gaps e.g. making sure that the roads keep moving, and key supplies for health/energy/food etc get through.
2) Operation Snow Bunting - the police operation set up to handle with problems on the roads (especially in Kent), and to deal with any criminals or hotheads who want to take advantage of the "bumpy ride"
3) Operation Redfold - the MOD operation that will co-ordinate any military assets (i.e. people) that are needed to help with transport and logistics etc. Yes it is in a "nuclear bunker", but that just happens to be where the MOD operations room is.
4) There will also be operations rooms in the Department of Health, the Department of Transport, DEFRA etc. They probably also have exciting names.
Yes, if we leave with No Deal the civil service are worried that there could be serious problems. But that is why they have set up the above. This does not mean everything will be OK. But is does mean that experienced officials have been thinking about it, and making plans.
