I'm convinced politicians (& the public they respond to) don't grasp the real value of space. They think it's a demonstration of national grandeur ("flags & footprints") plus pure science, and, deriving from that, an opportunity for jobs ("pork"). Smh, this is so deficient. /1
2/ The real value of space is that our civilization has reached the cusp of leaping beyond the boundaries of a single planet, so economic activity is on the verge of moving into space. Space will be the extended home of civilization. Everything we do is going to involve space.
3/ This seems like crazy talk to people (e.g., politicians) who can't afford to spend all day thinking about technology and how it is changing the world. But there ARE people who get paid to study space tech & economics all day. What we're trying to tell the politicians is...
4/...that robotics & space access have reached the tipping point. Civilization won't go into space slowly like it has for the past 50 years. It will go quickly. There will be consequences: geopolitical, societal, ethical, as well as economic. WE CAN'T AFFORD TO MESS AROUND.
