MPs are about to be conned. By voting for Theresa May's revised motion tomorrow, they will be extending Brexit to 22 May - and slamming the door on any further extension. Makes a mockery of the indicative vote process & their cross-party efforts, as no time to implement anything!

And even more. As you'll see, it's a stitch-up in all sorts of ways. It maintains the blackmail pressure of no-deal on MPs, even while slamming the door firmly shut on Brexit alternatives to Theresa May's frankendeal.
This is a win-win for Theresa May and the Tories. If it passes, her hand is hugely strengthened. If it fails, then you have the spectacle of Labour and the ERG turning down a chance at Brexit on Brexit Day (the one in everyone's minds, even if it's no longer the official one.)
Summary: nobody does devious like the Tories.

Lost in the avalanche of Brexit Day/Brexit vote news yesterday was the fact that the UK economy grew at its slowest pace since 2012 last year, with just 1.4% growth. It was also the first full year of business investment decline since 2009.

At the same time, the GDP growth forecast for 2019 was cut to just 1.2% i.e. even grimmer than last year's poor figure "as a consequence of extended Brexit uncertainties weighing on business activities and investment in particular, as well as weakened global growth."
So next time people say to you "hey, the economy's doing fine despite Brexit", it *really* isn't. More people may be in low paid precarious jobs, but the underlying economy is in a terrible state. And then there's all the damage Brexit is causing...

Liam Fox celebrates the growth in UK exports to non-EU countries. Mentions they're rising fast to countries including Japan, Canada and Switzerland... all of which we currently enjoy free trade agreements with as EU members. Head, meet desk!
And don't get me started on the shocking abuse of percentages, which have never been a useful measure of growth absent underlying data.
For example:
A) £100 to £200 (100% growth, or £100)
B) £1,000,000 to £1,010,000 (1% growth, or £10,000)
I'd rather have £10,000 extra than £100!

EU countries’ position on #Brexit delay being described to me still as a “cacophony” - some for short, others for long, some for strict conditions, others more relaxed BUT /1

While we've all been distracted by the big #Brexit votes in the Commons - some really interesting happenings in the Lords on the Trade Bill 1/
Last week, peers amended it to to say parliament (*both Houses*) must approve a negotiating mandate & approve a final trade deal before ratification

Also requires approval of mandate/deal by a designated select committees & consultation with the devolved administrations 2/
There have also been amdts which try and address the UK's negotiating objectives with the EU (e.g. customs union, Northern Ireland border, mobility framework), but I'll leave my excellent colleague @awstojanovic to explain what those mean... 3/

Irrespective of how MPs vote this afternoon it’s EU leaders who have final say on an extension to the Brexit process. Will they/won’t they say yes? How long for + how punitive will conditions be? Like so many things to do with #Brexit the answer is: we don’t know for sure yet 1
French, Dutch, Spanish and Irish leaders have been talking tough this week: They won’t grant an extension unless the Prime Minister comes up with a very good reason, they say. It’s true: Eu leaders are frustrated, irritated and fatigued by the Brexit process BUT 2
EU leaders also have two specific audiences in mind these days when they take to the cameras on Brexit i) UK MPs whom the EU wishes to help pressure into voting for Theresa May’s negotiated deal or something else realistic and /3

Theresa May has previously suggested that we might ask for a ‘short, limited extension’ to #Article50, which should go ‘not beyond the end of June’. If a #NoDealBrexit is defeated tonight, as widely expected, MPs will vote on an extension on Thursday. (2/10)
But given that trying 'one more heave' to agree May's deal looks unrealistic, more major change is needed - and any such change takes time. First there would be a need to build support for a different kind of deal in Westminster (probably across party lines) and Brussels. (3/10)

re-upping this - on gov's 21/1 #Brexit written statement yesterday eve - since not sure the news has cut thru'. Key points as I understand it: 1/
i) Gov will make *another* Brexit written statement by Thurs this wk (24/1), this time under EU(W)A s13(11), which may or may not say s'thing substantive;
ii) the s13(6) motion currently down on Order Paper, expected to be debated 29/1, is *not* the motion that will be debated 2/
iii) the motion that will be debated is this one below, a joint s13(6) and s13(11) motion, as set out in the gov's written statement 21/1;
iv) *MPs will have to re-table their amendments once the gov's joint motion is tabled* 3/

1. Worst national leadership in my lifetime forcing through the most damaging, misguided & missold policy I can remember. Ideology & vested self interest replace statesmanship, soundbites replace sound judgement & autocracy subverts democracy.

2. A flawed Leave campaign based on lies, deceit, disingenuity & over simplification & a #Remain one fought w/o any positivity from the Govt & no real commitment from Labour, whose leader was virtually AWOL, did no justice to #Brexit complexity & betrayed our democratic process.
3. A mere 37% of voters/26.5% of the Ppl voted leave in a legally Non-Binding test of public opinion which has been corrupted, on the basis of an illegitimate political promise & interpreted as being the irrefutable Will of the Ppl.
The 1st is insufficient to claim the latter!
