Metastasis is when tumor cells grow in a place different from where the primary tumor was found.
Common sites of metastasis for breast cancer (ductal) are liver, bones, lungs, and brain.
For some, chemotherapy or targeted therapies for ER+ and Her2+ can keep the metastatic disease at bay for months or even years.
A cell(s?) leave the primary, enter the blood steam, leave the blood stream somewhere else, and set up shop.
This process has many normal checkpoints that should stop it from happening.

1. de novo - found when the person is diagnosed with cancer
2. recurrent - comes after someone is diagnosed with primary disease
My research focuses on recurrent disease in ER+ breast cancer. We broadly study endocrine resistant breast cancer.
The goal in studying this type of resistance is two-fold:
1) Why does resistance occur?
2) How do we help those who have resistance?
