In #Saudi Arabia, land of the “emancipator of women,” you are jailed, tortured and put on trial if you are a women’s rights activists. And you get arrested if you are related to those activists or if you support them. time.com/5564838/saudi-…
-Khadijah al-Harbi,feminist writer who is pregnant & husband Thumar al-Marzouqi,writer
-Salah al-Haidar,whose mother women’s rights activist Aziza al-Yousef is on trial
-Badr al-Ibrahim,writer & physician
-Mohammed al-Sadiq & Abdullah al-Dehailan,writers
-Fahad Abalkhail,activist
The arrests are the latest reminder that de facto leader #Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman does not give a fuck about international condemnation of his brutality.
These are the first sweep of arrests to target individuals perceived as critics of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman since the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October.
So much for accountability.
Hello impunity.
Also arrested in #Saudi Arabia today, Ayman Aldrees, translator, activist, and husband of @AngelQShe_, a #Saudi feminist
Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman is determined to crush #Saudi feminists and those who support them.
Ever since news leaked in November that #Saudi women’s rights activists imprisoned at the orders of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman had been tortured - in the presence of his top aide - I’ve been posting this thread daily
#Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman, like all authoritarians, is terrified of feminism. google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…
- May 2018: unprecedented #Saudi crackdown vs feminism jailed more than a dozen women’s rights activists. Several were tortured; one was waterboarded.
- March 2019: activists put on trial
- April 2019: relatives & supporters of women’s rights activists arrested
For #Saudi regime, incl Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman who fashioned himself “emancipator of women,” feminism is an existential threat. Extreme patriarchy in the form of guardianship laws is foundation of their power. They consider feminism=terrorism .
The #Saudi regime counts on men as co-conspirators in that extreme patriarchy. The guardianship system by which male guardians control so much of Saudi women’s lives ensures that Saudi men - who themselves are oppressed by the regime - exercise power at least over women.
So when #Saudi men support feminism, it is seen as a threat to the regime because those men have rejected the power the regime gives them over women in return for accepting the regime’s power over them (the men). That explains why men are being arrested for supporting feminists
That is how patriarchy works: it is about power, not about individual men. Patriarchy privileges male dominance but it will punish those men who do not obey its rules. That’s why husbands, sons, and allies of feminists in #Saudi Arabia are being arrested.
I call women who accept crumbs of power from patriarchy in return for doing its bidding: Footsoldiers of the patriarchy.

I call men who refuse the power patriarchy gives them over women in return for accepting its dominance over themselves: Refuseniks of the patriarchy.
