1 / Digital political activism: I have been slowly populating this chart with relevant twitter accounts. The reason I have been putting work on this is because the effectiveness of political action depends on two things:
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
1 / First, the existence and following of authoritative sources (hierarchical structure). Second, fast viralization (anarchic or horizontal structure). At the viral level, the best number of cross-followings ranges from a few hundred to less than 2K.
2 / The immense majority of those creating viral action are NOT opinion-makers. They don't generate original content and they shouldn't: that is the prerogative of authoritative sources (qualified individuals, organizations, etc). Their role is to effectively spread content.
3 / This can't be done if their timeline is cluttered with non-authoritative and non-personal accounts resulting from #FBRParty and other #followback initiatives. The furious attempt to get more followers makes one weaker, and not stronger.
4 / The best followers are those you have a "quasi-personal" relationship with because they are the ones that will viralize the content you fish from the authoritative sources faster.
5 / If you want to make a political difference:
- follow the authoritative sources
- follow the good and the few: those you can count on to RT what is needed.
6 / Then you can still follow cool accounts related to your hobbies and have digital fun with friends without the clutter of 10-20K followers.
7 / The bitter truth is that most people desperate to have a high number of followers lie to themselves about their higher purpose. Deep inside, they know they do it because they are lonely and feel useless. They are under the illusion that lots of followers will fill that void.
