Today I'm here for the guys.
#learningdermatology
Have you ever seen this before?
Is this condition troubling your life?
Are you tired of covering your head all the time?

Acne folliculitis nuchae
Acne keloidalis nuchae
The two conditions I've shown here are siblings. Commonly seen in blacks and African Americans. The nature of our hair is curly. And a lot of men have some folded areas close to the neck. (All those rich looking men😁)
The condition is not a true acne. But so called because it looks like acne. 'folliculitis' because there's inflammation of the hair follicles. 'nuchae' because it's around the neck region. Folliculitis is replaced by keloidalis when it becomes a keloid.
So this condition usually starts as a folliculitis before turning keloidal. African hair us curly and coupled with the nature of the scalp at the back of the head then predisposes to this condition. Sometimes because of the curly nature, hair grows inwards instead of outwards.
Then repeated trauma in that area by your overenthusiastic barber to carve your head like Mase's own also worsens it. Like most conditions, this is better prevented.
1) Keep your hair if you can. If you must shave, tell your barber to shave in one direction.
2) Avoid excessive carving of the scalp especially in the neck region
3) Shampoo your scalp after each shave and even for five days after.
4) Moisturize your scalp. It reduces itching.
5) When the itching starts, try not to scratch it. You can pat gently instead. You risk irritating the follicles more when you scratch
6) There's a cream called bump stopper, apply it lightly in that area once the itching starts
7) The most important thing is prevention!
Once it starts and especially once it becomes keloidal, it becomes more difficult to treat.
See a doctor/Dermatologist if you when needed.
