Brexit: the state of play (Sunday am version). 1/ May will ask for an A50 extension to 30/6/19 but EUCO probably offers 9-21 month "flextension". If latter, May loses all authority in Tory party...
2/ Either way, the humiliation having to stand in EU elections finishes of May's de facto control of government. This is Corbyn's achievement (along with Sturgeon, Price and Lucas) as explained here newstatesman.com/politics/uk/20…
3/ Labour shadow cabinet at odds over 2 ways forward: a) put Customs Union and Second Referendum to separate votes in parliament (ensuring the PV falls) b) Insist they are a single legislative package. Only the latter fulfils party policy...
4/ The Lexiteers in the PLP are losing (and by all accounts losing it). Because Customs Union plus reg alignment - which Corbyn *has* to fight for - keepsi us close to EU. This why eg Morning Star, Maurice Glasman want no deal...
5/ The long delay is optimum for progressive forces - why? First, with a long delay the left parties have to fight the EU elections for real, not for show. Labour has to stand strong internationalist candidates ...
6/ With a long delay we get a Labour Party Conference. Oh yes. And that will re-commit the party to Remain/Reform in any subsequent general election or PV - unions and members strongly lining up to prevent stitch up. Shadow ministers who can't live with that would have to resign
7/ in the meantime Labour members will get to vote for a new NEC - where again the failed closet Lexit project will come under scrutiny...
8/ in short only Corbyn can rescue May and if he did so, on these terms, he would massively lose support among the modern, internationalist left grassroots of the party...
9/ EUCO might offer a long extension but work in reality for a short one. They don't want a Corbyn-led Labour Govt, or a Johnson-led Tory one inside Europe.
10/ So Labour needs to pull the plug on these talks. Let the CU, PV, Norway and Revoke go to a knockout competition in parliament. My guess is you end up with CU - but an executive that cannot execute it...
11/ ... for Labour, route one to a general election, which is our main objective, Is to end the talks and bring down the May administration. #GTTO

A summary and reaction to May's bombshell Brexit statement 1/ She's asking for a new A50 delay so that either cross-party talks or an exhaustive Commons vote can produce a new deal. WA has to stand but changes to future arrangement allowed...
2/ What it means: May has bottled out of a fourth vote; bottled out of an election and bottled out of No Deal. All to be welcomed but I can't seeing the KKK-inspired crazies of the Tory right being happy...
3/ May's entire strategy of reliance on Tory votes to get a deal through is over. Finished. Kaput. Two years of political energy, 29 ministerial careers, hours of legislative time, civil service work-hours - completely wasted...

So why is @theresa_may so stuck on her lousy deal? Well she has 4 objectives and her deal meets these and nothing else does I believe this explains much about her conduct the objectives are as follows THREAD
1/keeping the tory party together and in power this of course is the top priority. Theresa may is aware that any other options be it dal no deal or some BRINO deal with Corbyn would instantly result in a walk out by one faction and with no majority the gov would fall
2/ May is actually terrified of no deal. All the evidence is that this lwould result in awful consequences for millions of people which would destroy any government that presided over it if she wanted no deal she would not have negotiated a deal 2 start with

#euco #article50 extension decision was tough but rational. UK now has <3 weeks (until April 12, emergency summit pencilled in for April 10) finally to make up its mind. Parliament must now take control. Options, in diminishing order of *desirability* imho...thread follows./1
1. vote for Kyle-Wilson amendment, accepting her deal subject to 2nd 'confirmatory'referendum, then ask EU for longer extension, agreeing to hold European elections in UK...
2. revoke article 50 and start all over again.../2
3. Cross-party indicative vote majority for Norway Plus finally accepted by government (w/wout PM May), EU agrees to change Political Declaration, unchanged WA & Brexit by May 22
4. ditto, but only for plain vanilla customs union.../3

A thought/question, oh #Brexit Twitter about what happens if the Withdrawal Agrement is voted down again next week.

How does @theresa_may get sent back to Brussels to ask for an extension she says she will not ask for? 1/Thread
@theresa_may She said: "As prime minister I could not consider a further delay beyond 30 June."

People took that to mean she would resign.

But it could also mean, she would opt for a 'no deal' (Party unity over country) over a long extension. /2
@theresa_may How could Parliament stop her?

Because if you believe EU red line on UK participating in EU elections is immovable then the deadline for that decision is April 12.

Even if May falls (she could lose a 'no confidence' vote whichever ways she breaks) she is PM for 14 days. /3

Right #Brexit peeps, what is going on? What happens next?

Short answer is its all pretty fluid, but here's what I think I know after usual chats with both etc (1/thread)
May will ask for extension to June 30, per reports.

Less clear if she will also say UK prepared to 'no deal' on June 30. That might be a key omission to watch, on which more later.

So will the EU agree? /2
Not necessarily. As @adamfleming warned this AM - and later confirmed by @JunckerEU interview - EU may say a short extension is "conditional" on May passive her deal next week (presumed new vote Mon or Tues)

That would be a reason for a short extension/3

Intl Healthcare Bill - remaining Commons stages Mon 21/1, then goes to Lords; 1/
Ag. & Fisheries Bills - awaiting Commons report stages, nothing scheduled, still to go to Lords;
Financial Services Bill, started in Lords & awaiting report stage there, nothing scheduled, needs to come to Commons; 2/
Trade Bill - finished in Commons, Lords committee stage scheduled to start Mon 21/1. 3/3

2) so not only are there 50 #Brexit reports that are too scary to release but Brexiters can't be bothered reading them
