If the UK Government does eventually give serving personnel this cash it won't go to the poorest paid, it'll go to people earning more than £27,200 (more than £28,193 next year). An army Private's pay starts at £18,859, RAF Police Officer £18,800, Navy Rating £18,489

Maybe the UK Government should think about paying people properly instead of these gimmicks. An RAF Firefighter gets paid from £18,800 while a firefighter in the Scottish Fire and Rescue service gets more than £22,000 in their development phase

That RAF Police Officer I mentioned earlier starts on £18,800 but if they joined Police Scotland they'd start on just over £26,000. Instead of criticising @DerekMackaySNP for introducing a progressive tax regime the Tories should start paying public servants properly

A Warfare Specialist submariner on £18k operating out of Faslane would get nothing in these adjustments from the UK Government while the Commodore in charge of the base, earning more than £100k, will get £1,500 extra in his paypacket

Of course, people in these lower-paid ranks pay less tax if they're based in Scotland than they do if they are based elsewhere. I think the Scottish Government is travelling the right road on tax
