Nothing will destroy journalism's reputation faster than creating new rules to conceal newsworthy info in the public interest. It's the literal antithesis of journalism. And nobody - nobody - believes they will apply these new rules if an anti-Trump country hacks dirt on Trump:
Both the dirt on Manafort and the Steele Dossier came from foreign officials trying to interfere in the election - the case of the former, from the Ukrainian government working with a DNC agent. Why are there no conscience examinations over that? politico.com/story/2017/01/…
There's only one viable, ethical role for journalists: if you have information in the public interest that you authenticate & which does not endanger innocent people, you publish it regardless of the source or their motives - period. Here's @DavidBarstow:
