23. A New Way: Embracing the Paradox As We Lead and Serve. Matthew Dowd (@matthewjdowd). #my2019reading 1/5
This is a very personal exploration of what it means to lead & what our country and communities need in leaders. At its heart is Dowd's conviction that leadership requires an ability to live with paradox, to resist the temptation to resolve all in one direction or the other. 2/5
He begins with a moving recollection of a pilgrimage to holy places around the world. At the beginning it was about the places, but in the end it turned out to be about the people you have to encounter on the way. 3/5
Dowd then explores 10 paradoxes that leaders must embrace: fear vs love, truth vs uncertainty, confidence vs humility, heart vs head, big vision vs local action, idealism vs realism, boundaries vs openness, and delegation vs accountability. 4/5
There is much wisdom in the book and many stories, both funny and moving. Most importantly, it is less a book about what our leaders should do than about how each of us can act to lead in our own lives and circumstances. 5/5
