USF now has more than $30M invested in the Caribbean & Central America with interesting information being found in the #PanamaPapers.
How do you think the folks on the left are going to take it when they figure out their 'green' universities are investing in shell companies? So that they can fund fossil fuel activities that are linked to corrupt deals stealing from poor nations?
If the Board of Trustees is anything like many other university boards, they have a habit of investing into funds managed by friends & family of the trustees.
Like other universities, USF uses 'blocker corporations', shell companies, to launder the money to avoid paying taxes on the investment profits. With the side benefit of making the investments less transparent & harder to figure out!
So why is this important? Because hundreds of American universities are pouring 10s of millions & billions into shell companies that laundering money into investments. Investments that are often questionable in parts of the world where bribes are paid routinely to get contracts.
There are major US & foreign investigations into large scale corruption in more than a dozen Latin American countries & Africa, much of it linked to the extraction industries. Presidents from several countries are already in jail.
Duke University is also facing questions about similar funds running money through blocker corporations into companies connect to corruption & environmental damage.
Seems many universities may be taking taxpayer dollars & student tuition to give to their friends to invest in corrupt businesses around the world. #ButNothingsHappening
