It's me, @kylemarian! I'm excited to start a new week of conversations here with y'all.

I'm a #SciComm consultant w/ a passion for creating intersectional, interdisciplinary, & inclusive communities & experiences. This week we're covering practice, failure, strategy, & #comedy! [New Curator, Who Dis?]
A lil more about my #science background: I'm a former #physicalanthropologist who studied the Indonesian "hobbit" species #Homofloresiensis. I also taught dissection-based human gross anatomy and excavated w/ friends in #Atapuerca #PinilladelValle Spain.
My #SciComm training started w/ the @AldaCenter using acting-based #improv to finetune my sense of creating together w/ others & actively listening. Then I took a career pivot towards taking my MSc in #SciComm & #PublicEngagement at @EdinburghUni w/c led me to @BrightClubEDN!
These days, I do a lot of creating, beta-testing, failing, prototyping forms of #SciComm experiences/practice/communities/shows to better understand how to strategically create meaningful #science experiences audiences, participants, performers, & stakeholders.

Hello Wednesday nerds! Today we're doing A Practical Guide to Getting Butts in Seats - for when you've made a great show, and now you need to tell people about it and get them to buy tickets!
First things first - Who even ARE the people you want to come to this? Identify your audience! This will make things MUCH easier when it comes to marketing. Here's some questions to ask yourself and your team to ID your target audience:
-What's their age range?
-What other events do they go to?
-What TV shows do they watch?
-What podcasts do they listen to?
-What kind of work do they do? What kind of schedule do they have?
-Where do they live?
-What's their income level? What do they spend on?

Hello SciComm! Today we're doing a stage skills boot camp - I'm going to lay out the specific skills and knowledge you'll need as a non-stage professional to do a great talk, be a great guest on a show, and be way less anxious about it (you'll still be anxious, everybody is!)
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember through all of this is: What you're doing is FOR 👏 THE 👏 AUDIENCE 👏. Making sure they can hear you, see you, and understand you. It's not about YOU being comfortable. Being on stage is deeply uncomfortable, it's just a human reaction!
First up - making sure they can 👂 hear you.
I cannot stress this enough:
If there is a mic.
USE. THE. MIC.
A lot of people go "no, I'm a loud talker, I can just talk loud!", and the answer is no. Here's why -

Today we're talking about building a science show - I'm going to walk you through the process of taking a show from cool idea to actual event on stage in front of lots of people, and the big tripping points along the way (esp for folks who are new to the stage)
First things first - I'm not talking about a lecture, or a panel (although those can be PART of a science show). I'm talking about a SHOW, which is an event onstage meant to entertain. Most shows have the singular goal of entertaining, but ours is going to do even more...
...It's going to use science as our material to entertain people. It's really important to keep that goal of entertaining front-and-center while building this, and not to downplay the skills and experience those in the entertainment industry can add here.

This. And this happens because the definition of “impactful scientist” is still based on being old enough to be famous for a discovery, which skews to white and male, but def white. What about jr sci who have a social impact and are embarking on exciting science?
A Brief History of Time was a bestseller not because of Stephen Hawking’s citations but because it was a good book that connected with audiences. #scicomm often conflates scientific record with capacity to be interesting to a broad audience, which is ... stupid.
Another approach to public science, @WorldSciFest, is to look for young minority and white women scientists who are working on exciting new ideas and who can communicate them well and feature us. #scicomm

I'm a scicommer with much respect for both scicomm researchers and fellow scicommers. It's ok for us to laugh at ourselves everyone!

Don't come here to get defensive about your piece that debunks pseudoscience please 😂 or do! Up to you mate 😘
Interesting to note: Scicommers familiar with scicomm research seem to get this tweet and laugh at the complexity and paradoxes of their field.
Those more unwilling to accept this seem to be research scientists who do scicomm but aren't familiar with relevant scicomm research.
