1. THREAD: 2020 candidates - media coverage vs. @twitter followers

This is the U.S. cable news media coverage for each of the 2020 candidates over the last two weeks (ending this past Saturday). Data comes from @gdeltproject.
2. This is the aggregated polling data from @RealClearNews over a similar timeframe.

3. Other than a few candidates, the polling matches up closely with the media coverage. This begs the question: Are the candidates receiving more media exposure because they are leading in the polls or are they leading in the polls because they are receiving more media exposure?
4. Now take a look at Twitter followers gained over the same time period (note that Mike Gravel and Bill de Blasio are missing here because I don’t have enough data on them yet).
5. When you divide the number of Twitter followers gained by the number of media mentions you can see the candidates who are outperforming traditional media/polling on social media. Any guess who is at the top?

6. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that @JoeBiden is at the bottom. It probably says more about the insane amount of media exposure he has been receiving than anything else.
7. Of course, there are many possible explanations:

- Twitter demographics and cable news demographics are quite different
- More well known people on Twitter have already hit ceilings for their followers
- Twitter is global
- Tulsi’s appearance on @JoeRogan gave her a boost
8. No matter the reason or reasons, it is indisputable that media attacks against Tulsi have intensified recently, and they are not pulling any punches. One of the recent hit pieces in @thedailybeast led to this excellent rebuttal by @mtaibbi.

9. I know it is somewhat silly to compare cable news coverage to Twitter followers since they don’t have very much in common, but if the mainstream media is going to manipulate their polls to tell the narrative they want to tell then all bets are off.

1. THREAD Bipartisan charades. Last night @realDonaldTrump shared a compilation video of Nancy Pelosi stuttering at a press conference earlier in the day.

2. The @washingtonpost published a piece around the same time talking about fake @SpeakerPelosi videos circulating on social media where the videos were slowed down to give the impression of slurred or drunken speech.

I don’t trust the official polls related to the 2020 primary so I have been looking at Twitter data. While users on Twitter may not match voting demographics, it certainly paints a different picture. If retweets can be taken as a vote of support then this is the current ranking.
This is a graph of Tulsi’s retweets per tweet over time compared to her polling data over a similar time. Clearly something does not add up. It is just one poll, but she seems to be consistently hovering around 1% in every poll.

Before Mayor Pete’s town hall yesterday, Tulsi was ahead of everyone else (over last 2 weeks) which is more impressive when you consider she has just a fraction of their followers. I’m sure people within the DNC are looking at this data too, and they are probably getting worried.

1. You are probably not going to find anything like this in the MSM. This is an analysis of recent tweets by 2020 presidential candidates to see who is the most controversial based on their reply to like ratio. The winners are @BilldeBlasio, @HowardSchultz, and @SenGillibrand.
2. It is generally accepted that if your tweet gets a lot more replies than other engagements (likes, retweets) you said something pretty controversial, and people do not agree. @MerriamWebster is even looking into adding “ratioed” to the dictionary.

3. What is amazing is how the median ratio for @BilldeBlasio’s tweets is over 1. This means the majority of his tweets have more replies than likes. The sample size is only 44, but he is clearly not very popular, and it is somewhat baffling that he decided to run for president.

1. With @realDonaldTrump once again going after the Ninth Circuit (Happy Thanksgiving, I guess??), here's a medium-sized #thread on each of the five independent factual inaccuracies, analytical problems, and/or outright lies at the heart of his judicial temper tantrum:
1. Let's start with the easiest and most obvious flaw: The actual decision that has set off this tirade was by a federal district judge in San Francisco, _not_ the Ninth Circuit. Especially if he's relying on reversal rates (more on that shortly), that's a pretty key distinction.
2. As for the decision itself, the Executive Order the district court put on hold purports to redefine eligibility for asylum in a manner that is squarely inconsistent with the text of the relevant statute, 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

Odds are that _any_ judge would've ruled the same way.

1) How significant was the election impact of Russian hacking & leaking of the proceeds of the crime using WikiLeaks as a front? Very significant. We can visualize it by looking at some salient data from Gallup, among others.

Over the last two weeks, WikiLeaks has targeted their army of twitter trolls against me, stemming from a unanimous decision from @freedomofpress's board. WikiLeaks and their trolls are spreading a lot of misinformation about this, so I thought I'd just clear it up. 1/x
In 2010, US government officials put pressure on Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, and Bank of America to stop processing payments for WikiLeaks. There was no court order, this was an extra-legal attempt to financially censor a news organization. 2/x
This was fucked up. Banks shouldn't have the power to shut down publishers, especially without legal process. What stops them from doing the same to Democracy Now, or whoever else? When I helped start FPF in 2012, we started processing payments for WL to bypass censorship. 3/x
