I see Jeremy Hunt has been taking tips from Jeremy Corbyn on how to lose support across the board, by trying to please both sides and just pleasing nobody. I mean which Tory MPs or party members are going to back him for supporting No-Deal “with a heavy heart”? Literally none.
Hardline No-Dealers: “Why a heavy heart? Don’t you realise the only proper Brexit is No-Deal, which will set us free from EU vassalage to swashbuckle on the world stage? Clean Brexit is what 17.4m ppl voted for! I’m backing a true believer like Raab or Johnson or McVey!”
Pragmatic damage-limiters*: “If you realise No-Deal will be an utter disaster & failure, why would you not do everything in your power to stop it? How could you just wring your hands and let it happen ‘with a heavy heart’?”
*admittedly, a dwindling bunch in the Conservative party

Stop referring to it as an “implementation” period. We haven’t agreed what we’re transitioning too, so we can’t implement it. It isn’t even a transition period. It’s a pre-cliff edge standstill period during which we’ll try to negotiate the thing that we’re going to implement.
Language matters. It’s partly this kind of abuse of language that got us into this mess in the first place.

Jeremy Hunt today: “The political damage of no Brexit would be more than the economic damage of No-Deal”. In other words, he is telling ppl already nursing a sense of grievance that they are right & if they don’t get their way they’re entitled to throw their toys out of the pram.
Is stoking a sense of betrayal in an already polarised society what a responsible political leader should be doing? Rhetorical, don’t @ me
(NB - not specifically singling out Hunt here: virtually the entire Conservative party and a lot of Labour MPs guilty of this: all who say “stopping Brexit would destroy trust in politics”. The responsible alternative would be to say: “we don’t actually have to do this”.)

So... Esther McVey is backing Boris Johnson because he’s going to take on board her “Blue-Collar Conservatism” agenda (aka fascism-lite), whereas Matt Hancock is backing him on a pro-enterprise One Nation ticket. Hmmm
It’s almost as if Boris Johnson were trying to be all things to all people.
It’s also as if Conservative MPs are falling over themselves to find excuses to support Boris Johnson’s leadership bid even though they must know deep down that the reasons don’t stack up

1. May's #Brexit deal is the worst possible deal because it's less about delivering Brexit as it is electoral triangulation - and trying to please everyone always ends up pleasing nobody. Thread...
2. The backstop has been expanded to a full customs union to appease the DUP who don't want any difference between Britain and NI. It actually fails in that the crucial difference is marked by the regulatory regime, not the customs territory. So it fails on that count.
3. But what she can say to business is that a customs union protects trade - when it absolutely doesn't because the majority of checks or regulatory issues which won't be covered by a subsequent FTA. So she's lying there. She needs the EEA for those issues to go away.
