X : Since you're a big fan of mapping, why go on about narrative with Trump? Can't you map it?
Me : You can manipulate a space through many mechanisms including use of artificial needs e.g. to stop a vacuum cleaner being a commodity, get people to focus on "not losing suction"
... you can manipulate a social space and the ethical systems in exactly the same way. Create an artificial need i.e. Make America Great Again is nationhood equivalent of "It doesn't lose suction" ... does it clean the floor better, will peoples lives be better?
... you can also distract opponents with constant misdirection. The outrage cycle is great at this, it's the vacuum cleaner equivalent of making it look space age, so people don't realise they're paying a fortune for something trivially poor at its job.
You're seeing the same play of artificial needs through a single message "give people what they voted for" and misdirection through outrage with the brexit party ...
... it's no different with the EC (as opposed to the EP) and its barely hidden neoliberal agenda. The NHS is about as safe in the EC's hands (health services directorate), as it would be with the brexit party or the US agenda. None of these are good actors, it's all degrees.
... so yes, you can map it and do be wary of the narratives used to create either artificial needs or misdirection. They're not harmless, they can cause lasting damage to our social fabric.
X : The EC is pro the NHS, pro workers rights, pro environment.
Me : Really? Parts of it might be but you really need to understand the power of lobbying, political deals, schedule control and initiation. Next you'll be telling me Angela Merkel was good for the environment.
X : What's wrong with Angela Merkel?
Me : Nothing much. I find in general she has done a good job and is better than many alternatives. But in terms of environment and future pension funds .... let us say, not exactly a shining example under pressure from powerful lobbies.
X : Do you think Trump's visit should have been cancelled?
Me : No. The art of politics is not "doing deals with people you like" but usually "doing deals with people you don't like". US is an important ally. POTUS is an important office. Of course he should visit.
