NEW: Florida company VR Systems, which was targeted by Russian hackers before 2016 election, remotely accessed North Carolina county central computer for hours night before election to troubleshoot probs, potentially opening gateway for hackers. politico.com/story/2019/06/…
VR Systems did this despite heightened alert around Russian hacking efforts at the time, and despite the company's knowledge that both it and its customers had already been targeted by Russian hackers in spearphishing campaigns before the 2016 election.
The day after the company remotely accessed Durham County’s computers, electronic poll books running VR Systems software had problem in five precincts immediately after polls opened on Election Day - problems that have never been definitively explained by VR Systems or officials.
The remote-access in Durham wasn't an isolated incident, as my story notes. It was common practice for VR Systems to do this if a customer needed troubleshooting and VR couldn't send someone in person. VR Systems software is used in 8 states, including 64 of Florida's 67 counties

I covered the Manning hearing in 2011 and the revelation that Manning had asked Assange to crack a password was a shock, as it only came up at the hearing at the last minute during summary arguments by prosecutors when they flashed bits of the Assange/Manning chat log on screen
In the chat dated March 8, 2010, Manning asked “Nathaniel Frank,” believed to be Assange, about help cracking the main password on his classified SIPRnet computer so he could log on to it anonymously.

Researchers in Israel have created proof-of-concept malware that alters CT and MRI scans in real-time on hospital networks to add realistic, malignant-seeming growths to scans before radiologists/doctors examine them or remove real cancerous nodules/lesions without detection.
In blind study using real CT lung scans, 70 of which were altered by their malware, they tricked three skilled radiologists into misdiagnosing patients nearly every time. Even a state-of-the-art lung-cancer screening software tool was tricked by their cancer-producing malware.

ASUS, one of world’s largest computer makers, installed backdoor on thousands of customer computers last yr after hackers compromised its software update tool. The file was signed w/ ASUS digital certificates to make it look like authentic software update. motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/…
